in memoriam

Those birds — quite subdued
By the damp in dawn,
Sing on with solemn attitude;
This day, in memoriam.

Parades pass through every town
From here to Canada;
Bugles tap their lonesome sound,
This day, in memoriam.

Buds, blooms and sprigs of green,
Formed into wreaths of honor;
Gently released to float downstream,
This day, in memoriam.

Flags fly half-mast ’til noon —
Remembering those who’ve passed;
Then raising high in a proud salute
This day, in memoriam.

At home and abroad, in danger, despair,
On diverse fronts of human strife;
Those who serve still need our prayers,
This day, in memoriam.
